Atlanta Violence-Free Zone

The Atlanta Violence-Free Zone, supported by the Marcus Foundation, was first implemented in Atlanta’s Ben Carson and Harper Archer Middle Schools three years ago with very positive results. The VFZ school initiative is supported by after-school, weekend, and summer programs that engage the entire community from the ages of five through 80. They include academic/social development, career development, community mobilization, and family strengthening.

For the 2009/2010 school year, the Violence-Free Zone is operating in five schools: Harper Archer, Ben Carson, Coretta Scott King, and BEST Academy middle schools, and Frederick Douglass High School. There are 25 VFZ Youth Advisors working in the schools, serving as hall monitors, mediators, and role models, and acting as character coaches. They also mentor more than 450 high-need “at promise” students enrolled in the VFZ mentoring program.
